Chinese Matcha: Premium Powder for Global Beverage & Food Industry

China Dominates Global Matcha Production: Output Hits 70% of World Supply, Exports Surge

China has officially become the world’s largest matcha producer and exporter, with its 2025 output reaching 12,000 tons—nearly 70% of global supply—surpassing Japan for the first time in both production and export volume. Driven by booming global demand for healthy, natural ingredients, Chinese matcha is gaining traction across 54 countries and regions, including the US, Germany, Japan, and Australia.

The country’s matcha industry is concentrated in Guizhou and Zhejiang, two regions with ideal high-altitude, misty terrain and pollution-free soil. Guizhou’s Tongren, known as “China’s Matcha Capital,” produced 2,500 tons in 2025, with exports hitting 1,300 tons. Zhejiang’s 2026 Q1 exports surged 730% year-on-year to 1,241 tons, valued at $19.3 million, reflecting strong global appetite.

What sets Chinese matcha apart is its strict quality control and organic certification. Leading manufacturers like Guicha Group operate the world’s largest single matcha refining plant, with a 4,000-ton annual capacity. All products comply with EU organic standards, free from pesticides or additives. The production process—20–30 days of shading, hand-picking, steam fixation, and low-temperature stone grinding—preserves maximum nutrients, including EGCG antioxidants and L-theanine.

Global brands, cafes, and food manufacturers are increasingly choosing Chinese matcha for its consistent quality, competitive pricing, and versatility. It is widely used in lattes, desserts, baking, and wellness products. As the global matcha market grows at an annual rate of over 20%, China is well-positioned to maintain its leadership, combining ancient tea heritage with modern innovation to meet the world’s demand for pure, premium matcha.
